Wisconsin Brain Injury Awareness

Everyone knows someone.

Everyone knows someone with a brain injury.

Brain injuries have become alarmingly common. In fact, some medical studies suggest more than 5 million Americans suffer brain injuries each year. Some survivors of these devastating injuries are left with highly visible deficits that hinder every aspect of their daily lives. Slurred speech, facial drooping and partial paralysis are just a few examples.

Still other survivors suffer equally debilitating complications that cannot be seen with the naked eye. They look healthy or normal, even as they battle life-altering physical challenges like severe dizziness, memory loss, fatigue and complex vision problems. It is the survivors of these so-called 'invisible injuries' who often struggle the most to find support because others can’t see their injuries. "You look perfectly fine and normal to me" is a common remark such survivors often hear. But these survivors are NOT fine, and they need our help.

Every second counts when brain injuries are involved. Time lost is brain lost, and even minor delays in care can result in permanent damage... or death. But these initial medical timelines aren't the only deadlines survivors face. Brain injuries are extremely expensive, and survivors often find themselves racing against the clock while trying to pay for essential medical care and keep a roof over their heads. The financial costs of a brain injury are staggering – far more than any average person or family can deal with alone. It truly takes a village to help survivors rebuild their lives.

A Wisconsin Family in Need

The Hapka's are a proud Wisconsin family who have called the Badger State home for generations. Their legacy is one of service and giving back, and their ranks include military veterans, farmers, laborers, and teachers.Robert and Danny Hapka are locally beloved veterans and remembered by many area residents for their years of military and community service, as well as their involvement in Veterans of Foreign wars (VFW).John and Shirley Hapka are well-known for their years of service to their community and faith. Shirley was a teacher and librarian who spent thirty years helping at-risk youth while running multiple community service programs and making sure that elderly, ailing and disabled homebound patrons received the library materials they needed. Her husband John Hapka was a veteran of the National Guard, and a long-time employee of the local university and their church. John was known for his passionate care of homeless animals, and both John and Shirley were proud supporters of area animal rescues and the food pantry. The Hapka's have given so much to Wisconsin, and now they need our help.

Challenges Today

John and Shirley’s son, Tom, suffered a massive brain injury after college – through no fault of his own. He was left completely debilitated with severe vertigo, coordination deficits, and a host of other serious medical problems.John and Shirley immediately stepped in and sacrificed everything to help Tom. They closed out his Milwaukee apartment and moved him back into their home to care for him. They drained their retirement, took out loans, and refinanced their home to pay for his ongoing medical care. John and Shirley made these sacrifices without complaint, often telling others “that is what families do” for a loved one in crisis.Today, Tom continues to battle the complications of his traumatic brain injury, his parents have passed, and he is fighting to pay for his ongoing care and hold on to the home his parents fought so hard to save for him. His only sibling tries to help as much as possible despite her own medical condition, but the fallout from Tom’s injury is simply too massive.
